Kodaikanal Hill Garlic (GI-Tagged) | Naturally Grown
Product Description
GI-Tagged Kodaikanal Hill Garlic
Sourced from the hills of Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, this GI-tagged Kodaikanal Hill Garlic is traditionally known as Malai Poondu (மலை பூண்டு) in Tamil, Mala Veluthulli (മല വെളുത്തുള്ളി) in Malayalam, Betta Bellulli (ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಬೆಳ್ಳುಳ್ಳಿ) in Kannada, Konda Vellulli (కొండ వెల్లుల్లి) in Telugu, and Pahadi Lahsun (पहाड़ी लहसुन) in Hindi.
Kodaikanal Hill Garlic is known for its distinctive aroma and strong, characteristic garlic flavour. It is suitable for everyday Indian cooking and can be used in curries, rasam, chutneys, pickles, gravies, marinades and other traditional recipes.
Traditional Smoking Process
One of the traditional post-harvest practices followed by farmers in the Kodaikanal hills is smoking the garlic to help preserve it for longer storage.
After harvesting, the garlic is kept inside a room. Smoke is introduced into the room and the room is closed, allowing the garlic to be exposed to the smoke. This traditional process is part of the local way of handling and preserving the garlic.
Because of this process, Kodaikanal Hill Garlic may not always look completely white. The outer skin or bulb can have a slightly darker or smoky appearance. This is a natural characteristic of the traditional smoking process and does not necessarily indicate poor quality.
Directly Sourced from Farmers
At Naati Grains, we source Kodaikanal Hill Garlic directly from farmers in the Kodaikanal region.
This is a seasonal agricultural product, so natural variations in size, shape, colour and appearance can occur.
Since the garlic is sourced directly from farms and handled as a natural seasonal product, approximately 2–5% of the bulbs may have minor damage during harvesting, handling or transportation. We take great care during sorting and packing to reduce this as much as possible.
Minor variations or occasional damaged bulbs are a natural possibility with a seasonal farm product.
