The most common and yet valuable spice in our kitchen is Cinnamon. It is not only delicious but also has numerous health benefits. Cinnamon is reasonably priced and easily available in most stores. However, did you know that there are two main types of cinnamon that are commonly used? The most prevalent kind is Cassia cinnamon(Cinnamomum cassia), which comes from Indonesia and China and is sold all around the world. When we buy cinnamon we blindly buy the cheap one without understanding the difference. It’s high time that you understood the difference and bring the true friend of your health under the spotlight.

True Cinnamon

Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum Verum), often known as real or true cinnamon, is a spice grown mostly in Sri Lanka and India's southern states. It is acquired from the inner bark of the Cinnamomum tree. Cinnamon sticks are made by cutting the inner bark into thin strips and drying it in the sun until it curls. Next, the smaller pieces are stuffed inside the longer strips and these sticks can be split into smaller bits which are known as cinnamon sticks or quills. It has a delicate and mildly sweet flavor which is suitable for desserts. Though it is costly, it is worth buying.

Difference between cassia and Ceylon cinnamon

Each kind has its own color, taste, and smell. The ground cinnamon powder is often difficult to differentiate between the two types. However, it is possible to differentiate the cinnamon which is in stick form, the rolled bark of Ceylon cinnamon is thinner and multilayered than the thicker bark of its Cassia, which is actually the plant bark.

When it comes to color the Ceylon cinnamon looks paler than cassia cinnamon which has a more reddish appearance. As we know, Cassia cinnamon is believed to be of lower quality. Hence, it is widely used and is usually referred to as "cinnamon" in supermarkets. Ceylon cinnamon is a more expensive and rare kind of cinnamon, making it difficult to reach people.

Benefits of Ceylon cinnamon

A brief overview of the benefits of Ceylon cinnamon, it contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that have numerous health benefits. Cinnamon, for example, is high in beta-carotene, which contributes to its rich brown color. Because they may be transformed into vitamin A, the carotene family of pigments serves as an important provitamin. This vitamin is essential for maintaining the health of your eyes. The other main benefits of Ceylon cinnamon include,

1. To reduce cholesterol level

2. Reduce the chances of heart disease

3. Maintain blood sugar level

Side Effects of Cassia cinnamon

It’s important to know both sides of a coin, in order to make a wise decision. Coumarin, which is found in Cassia, is considered to be toxic when consumed in large doses. Coumarin is a naturally occurring chemical found in a variety of plant types. Coumarin has been linked to harming the kidneys, liver, and lungs. It has the potential to cause cancer. Cassia has about 1% coumarin, but Ceylon has only 0.004% or 250 times less. This level is so low that it is frequently undetected. If you regularly consume cinnamon then it's advisable to opt for Ceylon rather than cassia cinnamon.

It's recommended to use Ceylon Cinnamon instead of Chinese Cinnamon or Cassia if you're using cinnamon for weight reduction or as a health supplement. Ceylon Cinnamon enhances the flavor of your foods and pairs nicely with tea, coffee, bakery, and sweet dishes, Ceylon Cinnamon from Sri Lanka is for those who choose health over taste.
